Review Part I of Pathways to Professionalism (Back)

Published by Renee on Nov 23, 2009

You've probably read "Pathways to Professionalism" several times. It's been printed in the newsletter and in professional standard articles. While the Code of Ethics establishes enforceable ethical standards, it does not address the issues of courtesy or etiquette.

In it you will find 3 sections: Respect for the Public", "Respect for Property" and "Respect for Peers".

Under "Respect for the Public", it's as simple as following the "Golden Rule". Treat people the way you would want to be treated.

These courtesies for REALTORS(R) are voluntary and not all-inclusive. Common sense will dictate additional local customs and practices.

Dress appropriately, schedule appointments in advance, communicate without using industry jargon and show courtesy and respect to your client.  Notify your client as soon as possible if the showing is going to be delayed or has been cancelled.

Promise only what you can deliver. If you tell your client you will give them a weekly report on the market conditions, showings, advertising, etc., do it.

If showing an occupied house, don't forget to announce yourself when entering the home and each room. Turn off lights, lock doors and make sure inside pets are secure before you leave.

Be aware of and respect cultural differences.

Why is all this important? It sets you apart from other "professionals". Remember, you are working with people who are making large financial decisions. They are depending on your knowledge and expertise to lead them through the maze of decisions and paperwork.

Remember, they don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Next month; Part II "Respect for Property".
